Joshua Weitzel is a guitarist and shamisen player from Kassel, Germany, based in Kyoto, Japan. His work is based on exploration of dynamics and contrasting parameters such as stasis and progress, linear and spatial development, control and unexpectedness. He has worked with a number of internationally recognized artists, among them improvisers, composers, noise musicians, fine artists, filmmakers, dancers, poets and Jazz musicians and has performed on various occasions across Europe, Israel and Japan. From 2015-2016 Joshua organized the Chamäleon Concerts at Lolita Bar in Kassel, a monthly series for experimental music that is still ongoing.

 

He has played with musicians such as Eddie Prévost, Klaus Bru, Matthias Schubert, Martin Speicher, Ross Lambert, Nicola Hein, Brad Henkel, Hada Benedito, Toshimaru Nakamura, Sam Andreae, London Improvisers Orchestra, Antoine Mermet, Rabito Arimoto, Maegaki Yuki and many more. He works currently with Chie Nagai, Ken Ikeda, Massimo Magee, David Stockard, Eric Petzoldt, Ulrike Lentz, Sebastian Koisser, Ove Volquartz and Saito Ryota.

Chie Nagai was born in Chiba, Japan and studied classical song at the Musashino Music Academy. She then worked as a music teacher in Tokyo before relocating to Germany and completing another degree as a soprano as well as one in elementary music pedagogy. She has since worked on numerous projects, from baroque music to romantic song to contemporary composition and free improvisation.

 

She has premiered works of Yoshinao Kobayashi, Gabriel Fischer and Hyunbae Lee and has further worked with Christian Wolff, Charlotte Seither, Eddie Prévost, Ed Lucas, Ken Ikeda, Gertrud Weyhofen, Martin Speicher, Ove Volquartz and many others.
