Liquid Architecture and White Fungus present SUBLATE

Liquid Architecture, Australia’s biggest sonic arts organization, is coming to Taiwan to hold a series of events in Taipei, Taichung and Tainan. As part of the tour Liquid Architecture and White Fungus are collaborating to hold the final event SUBLATE at Korner on December 2. The event will feature Taiwanese and Australian performance, live electronics, noise and techno DJs.

Liquid Architecture and White Fungus have also collaborated to produce a new publication to accompany the tour. The publication contains articles about Wang Hong-Kai, Betty Apple, and Acid House. Tickets to SUBLATE will include a free a copy of the publication when purchased from select retailers (details coming soon).

Sublation is a term for describing dialectical tension (to negate as we conserve, to lift up as we destroy, to counter as we attack). Contradiction here makes sense. Can we embrace sound both in its contexts and as phenomena? Is transcendence somehow nearer when we descend into our basest drives - when we submit to the power of affect, and dance?

JANNAH QUILL

Jannah Quill

Jannah Quill is a Sydney and Melbourne based artist whose experimental approach to the uncasing of electrical processes manifests in installation, performance and recorded sound. In her live performances, she sculpts cracked everyday electronics into pulsating, beguiling and menacing fields of static and tone. Her approach to sound-making is heavily influenced by her interest in dance and club music apparatus and the ways in which this can blend with experimental, improvisatory and collaborative music.

Jannah’s music and art practice embraces ordinary digital interfaces and technological machines as materials to generate new experiences reinterpreted from the intended consumer use of the digitally banal. In her hands, solar panels generate audio signal from off-the-shelf lighting products; a laptop’s text-to-speech function becomes vocal samples on thumping techno driven tracks; and game development programs are used to create installations of deconstructed digital imagery.

CHUN YIN RAINBOW CHAN

Chun Yin Rainbow Chan works across music, performance and installation. Born in Hong Kong and raised in Sydney, Chan is interested in mistranslations, diaspora and the effects of globalisation on modern Chinese society. Her research engages with the authentic and the copy, exploring sites of exchange and desire which complicate Western notions of originality and appropriate consumption. Central to Chan's work is the circulation of knock-off objects, sounds and images in global media. Her work positions the fake as a complex sign that shapes new myths, values and contemporary commodity production.

Tying together her works across installation and pop music is the relationship between nostalgia, migration and identity. She recently released her debut record Spacings (Silo Arts & Records) which was feature album on FBi Radio, Radio Adelaide, RTRFM, and nominated for a SMAC Award (Record of the Year). Under her techno project, Chunyin, Chan released Code Switch EP on UK label, Off Out, in September. Chan has performed extensively including live appearances at Sydney Opera House, Museum of Contemporary Art, Gallery of Modern Art, Art Gallery of New South Wales, Museum of Old and New Art, and Iceland Airwaves. Her installations have been exhibited with Firstdraft Gallery, Liquid Architecture, 4A Centre for Contemporary Asian Art and Longli International New Media Arts Festival, China.

AL BURRO

Al Burro (London) first got interested in electronica back in 1994 when he first heard Jeff Mills’ Transmission 1. Drawn to the futuristic soundscape, he and a friend bought their first set of belt-driven decks back in 1995 and this began a longstanding affair with techno. The Burro is equally at home toiling in industrial warehouses as he is lazing in ambient fields. A firm believer in variations on a common theme: It's about the mood not the genre. You can usually find the Burro at Korner in Taipei doing what he likes doing.

BETTY APPLE

Cheng Yi-Ping aka Betty Apple (b.1986, based in Taipei) is a sound artist, electronic composer and DJ, and her practice is mainly in live art, sound art and video. Using sound and body as her artistic approach, the concept of her works is rooted from the postcolonial surrounding she originally comes from. By desecrating the imaginary historical burden and false symbols of race and history with the fictional intercontextuality, Cheng intends to break the control of industrial civilisation and to deconstruct the order of the new world.

Dino (aka Liao Ming-He) is a guqin (an ancient stringed Chinese musical instrument) maker and noise performer based in Taipei. Once a bassist of the Clippers Band, he is a seminal figure in the second wave of the noise movement in Taiwan during the late-1990s. He uses simple analogue equipment to create electronic sound with no input, which is known as ‘recycle music’, by generating loops from circuitry noise, static, or microphone feedback. In recent years, Dino participates in experimental films and live music production for the theatre. He was awarded Best Sound Effects in Taipei Film Festival (2003). Dino is particularly fond of British punk subculture and traditional Chinese classics, of which the influence can be found from his works.

Lujiachi is a member of Scattered Purgatory (Guruguru Brain) and LUDU (Lonely God), and he is a former guitarist of Sleaze. While his music practice, once devoted to guitar, has since moved on to synths, Lujiachi's sounds are still rooted in Eastern aesthetics but also combined with ambient, drone, industrial, krautrock, and world music. Lujiachi released an album, Circle, on WV Sorcerer Productions in 2016.

Given the meaninglessness of so much work in society, Tzu Ni seeks to create a setting or environment where a listener can enter into a dream-like state, momentarily isolated from the outside world and, in that space, more intensely perceive one’s frame of mind and body. Her practice in spatial and aural installation is an exploration of the reciprocally constructed connections between analogue sound and refracted light.

BERSERK

Berserk is a noise project initiated by Jared Xu in 2015. To date, Bersek has released three solo albums and one split LP with Japanese noise artist Merzbow.
