Taipei Event Guide: February 2018

The first month of 2018 is in the books, and the Year of the Dog is upon us.February is normally a quiet month due to Chinese New Year transforming  Taipei into a ghost town, however don’t be fooled, there’s plenty happening.

Here are our best picks:

1/2 (Student):  FSIT Mingle @ Brass Monkey

A warm welcome to the Class of 2018.

If you’re a new exchange student fresh off the boat, head over to the Brass Monkey (Fuxing) and join  the Foreign Students in Taipei (FSIT) team.

Stay for the legendaryLadies Night after, to get the lay of the land, so to speak.

3/2 (Live music):  James Joyce Bar and 23 Public Beitou Crafthouse

Catch the fantastic country/rock band  Twangover in action at the friendly James Joyce Irish Bar.

Combine a trip to Beitou for the flower season at day and the soothing sounds of Joshua Gerardi at craft beer bar 23 Public Beitou at night.

5/2 (Bars/Sports):  SUPERBOWL LIVE

Can the Eagles upset the Patriots? You can find out at these great bars that will be up  early to  show the game live:

Pachuco, Brass Monkey, Patio 84 (Tienmu) and River (Taoyuan)

5/2 (Concert) :The xx Live in Taipei

Experimental pop trio The xx stops over for a show at Taipei’s NTU Sports Center as part of their Asian tour.

Tickets are sold out (as usual) at present, but if you can get a ticket, it'll be well worth the money. The perfect preamble to a romantic Valentine's Day.

10/2 (Club): Oskar Offermann @ Korner

The German resident DJ of Panorama Bar and owner of music label “White” in action takes over underground nightclub king Korner (which will be closed during CNY)

Here's a taste of what to expect

10/2 (Live Music): Band Night @ River

River Bar, an institution in Taoyuan, will be ringing in the Chinese New Year with a wild Saturday night of live music and boozing.

On the menu is an eclectic rock'n roll playlist from eccentric Southern gentleman DJ Wildcat Tex, a Blues Brothers lookalike and self-proclaimed love child of Elvis Presley and a voodoo queen.

Then rock out to Japanese band Nuke and the psychedelic soundscapes of Crocodelia. Drink specials all night!

10/2 (Valentine's)  Lovers' Week @ Pachuco

They say the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach. I"m not one to argue.

Authentic Mexican restaurant and bar Pachuco will test this theory and turn Valentines Day into an amorous lovefest from the 10th to 14th of February. Bring a date or meet one there!

Tequila will be in overflow to hurry Cupid along.

14/2 (Valentine's): I Cookie U @ Barcode

You're set for a sexy date with Taiwan's favorite female DJ, Cookie at stylish Xinyi lounge bar Barcode . The perfect spot for an elegant celebration with your significant other.

24/2 (Festival): Carnaval 2018

Taiwan’s biggest Latin festival is back.

Organized by Latinos Taiwan and ICRT and supported by Maji Square and Triangle, this annual celebration of all things Latino is our personal the highlight of the February calendar.

The carnival takes place at the Taipei Floral Expo Park and Maji Square and is divided in 3 parts: Parade, Market and Performance.

Enjoy the big parade with sensual samba girls and the infectious energy of drum beats.

At the food and handicraft market, you can gorge yourself on the culinary delights from Mexico, Argentina, Peru and buy handmade clothing and accessories.

Later, catch over 20 Latino musical acts and performers on stage, and get your salsa, bacchata  or even capoeira groove on if you’re brave enough!

Starts at 11AM and finishes at 7PM.

Following that, the afterparty is ...

24/2 (Club) Cariparty @ Triangle

No need to go home. Keep the Carnaval spirit going with African, Latin and Caribbean vibes at naughty Triangle club in adjacent Maji Square. Party the night away with DJ Laurent Hounsavi.

25/2 (EDM, Festival) DreamMonster

Outdoor music festivals were all the rage in 2017, with party goers abandoning overpriced clubs for overpriced festivals.

This one is bound to be one of the year's best though with a superstar lineup, and it also falls on the birthday of yours truly!

Expect everybody to get their motherf**king hands up.

Lineup:

  • Afrojack
  • Dash Berlin
  • Nicky Romero
  • Danny Avila
  • VINAI
  • WolfPack

28/2 (Culture) Taipei Lantern Festival

Hopefully by now you're all partied out and yearning for a bit of culture on the last day of this epic Friday.

The Taipei Lantern Festival is a not-to-be-missed chance to experience both Taiwan’s Chinese cultural heritage and folklore and its cutting-edge technology.

In celebration of the Chinese New Year, world-famous stars and theater groups will perform at the festival and there will also be a cultural and creative market. It is one of the most popular dates on the calendar, so enrich yourself and don’t miss it.

2-15 Feb (Culture):  Taipei Lunar CNY Festival

The Dihua New Year's Goods shopping street will feature hundreds of stands, 15 food trucks and guest appearances by chefs on weekends.

Visitors can learn the art of  red envelopes and New Year’s banners and immerse themselves in the lively, colorful Chinese New Year experience in Taipei.

The 2018  festival has been expanded to Ningxia Night market, Taipei Station Wholesale Market, Rongbin Shopping District and Taipei City Mall.

All Feb (Nature): Yangminshan Flower Season

February is the perfect time to head to the mountains and enjoy all that scenic Yangminshan has to offer.
